How it works
Zakat is 2.5% of wealth that has been in your possession for a full lunar year and is above the nisab. The nisab is the value of 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver or 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold. Because silver is far cheaper, most scholars recommend the silver nisab — it makes zakat due on a smaller amount and benefits more people in need.
Enter the current market value of each asset: cash in hand, bank balances, gold and silver, business stock, and money owed to you that you expect to receive. Subtract debts that are due now. Enter today's per-tola rate for silver or gold to set the nisab. Your house, car and personal belongings are not counted. The 2.5% applies in any currency.
This is a calculation aid, not a fatwa. For questions about specific assets — such as plots held for investment, pension funds or shares — consult a scholar you trust.
