How it works
Your paycheck shrinks in four main steps. Pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k) come out first and lower your taxable income. Federal income tax is then charged on what is left after the standard deduction, using progressive brackets — 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% for 2026. FICA takes 6.2% for Social Security (on wages up to $184,500) and 1.45% for Medicare, plus an extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages above $200,000. Finally, most states charge their own income tax.
Being in the 22% bracket does not mean 22% of your salary goes to federal tax. Only the portion of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so your effective rate — total tax divided by salary — is always lower than your top bracket. The result panel shows both.
Nine states have no tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. For other states, enter an approximate flat rate — most fall between 3% and 6%, while California and New York reach higher at upper incomes. The calculator uses the standard deduction and does not include tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit, which would raise your take-home pay.
Frequently asked questions
How much is taken out of a $1,000 paycheck?
For a typical single filer with no state tax, roughly 15%–20%: 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare plus federal income tax withholding, which depends on your annual salary. Expect about $800–$850 take-home.
What are the 2026 federal tax brackets?
For single filers: 10% up to $12,400, 12% to $50,400, 22% to $105,700, 24% to $201,775, 32% to $256,225, 35% to $640,600, and 37% above. Married filing jointly brackets are roughly double.
Does contributing to a 401(k) lower my taxes?
Yes. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal and most state income tax, so every $100 you contribute reduces your take-home pay by less than $100. They do not reduce Social Security or Medicare tax.
Why is my actual paycheck different?
Employers withhold based on your W-4, and your paycheck may also include health insurance premiums, HSA contributions, local taxes or state disability insurance. This calculator covers the main taxes only.
